Brighter Future Myanmar Foundation

Brighter Future Myanmar Foundation (BFM) is one of the largest philanthropic foundations in Myanmar, started as a charity project during Cyclone Nargis in 2008. Its mission is to uplift the lives of underdeveloped community members at the grassroots level across Myanmar. The ultimate goal is to help eradicate poverty in the long run through its social initiative projects in five important sectors. To date, BFM has invested more than 156 billion Kyats in donations and social initiative projects.

Over the last decade, BFM has been focussed its initiatives on five pillars; Water Project, Disaster Relief and Recovery, Women’s Empowerment, Youth and Education, and Community and Health. Our initiatives have impacted thousands of communities across the country, many of which are building their capacity as self-sustaining communities.

Since then, Myanmar has undergone a period of significant change and transformation. With this comes greater complexity in the areas of community development. This demands a more cautious approach to due diligence from all organizations and a reassessment of areas where we can have the greatest impact.

To respond to these realities, the Brighter Future Myanmar Foundation (BFM) is conducting a full external review and will implement changes to its governance. At the minimum, these changes will include appointing an independent board, implementing guidelines of an international standard, channelling all contributions and donations through a trust account, and working through trusted philanthropic channels. BFM will also review its chosen pillars of contribution to ensure the foundation is focussed on areas it can continue to have significant impact.

As the needs of the country evolve, we will continue our journey in improving our operations and implementing stronger measures in governance. This will ensure BFM is well-positioned to succeed in uplifting the lives of underserved communities at the grassroots level in Myanmar.
